Mahmut Selim Ersan
Assistant Research Professor
After two years of postdoctoral research at the Southern Nevada Water Authority, Mahmut Selim Ersan is ready to apply his background in water reuse and treatment engineering to advance sustainable resource and technology development at Arizona State University.
“ASU is one of the world’s leading research institutions in the field of environmental engineering,” he says. “I have always been impressed by the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research efforts happening here, and I look forward to joining them.”
Ersan believes that many problems we face in the context of engineered systems can be solved through reference to nature. This is why, as an environmental engineer, he is eager to link natural and engineered systems to solve practical problems. In fact, Ersan says, it is now vital that we do so.
“Water pollution and scarcity resulting from climate change, increasing population and unsustainable sourcing are becoming major global threats to public health,” he says. “Therefore, research focusing on potable water quality and sustainable water resources is paramount.”
When not applying himself to work, Ersan plays multiple musical instruments and enjoys time outside hiking, camping and fishing. He is also a certified scientific scuba diver.
