Before an engineer leads their first project, joins a company for the first time or even sets foot on a work site, they are a student. Mentoring engineers when they begin their educational journey can empower the future engineering workforce to create a lasting impact.
Terracon, an employee-owned engineering consulting firm, is establishing a $50,000 endowed scholarship to support civil engineering students in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
Tim Anderson, Terracon chief operating officer and a Fulton Schools alumnus, says the scholarship reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the futures of young engineers who attend one of the universities from which Terracon hires the most.
“We strive to be good stewards in our community,” Anderson says. “We are using our influence, capital and knowledge to be a better partner to the engineering community, starting at the earliest point possible.”
Terracon announced the scholarship during Intern Fest, an annual celebration of student talent and partnership growth, to commemorate the impactful student-centered gift.
Creating a lasting impact
Terracon has a history of engaging ASU students through its partnerships with the annual Arizona Pavements and Materials Conference and Friends of Civil and Environmental Engineering, or FOCE2, through which the company has supported students’ capstone projects, created internships and hosted sponsored events.
Terracon’s contribution establishes a scholarship endowment, which generates support annually long after the initial gift is made. The endowment will sustain itself and create scholarship support in perpetuity.
Ram Pendyala, director of the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment and a Fulton Schools professor of civil, environmental and sustainable engineering, says the scholarship shows Terracon’s commitment to Fulton Schools students and provides scholarship assistance for years to come.
“The generous Terracon scholarship endowment represents a powerful and lasting investment in our students’ success,” Pendyala says. “By creating a sustainable source of funding, future generations of students will have the support they need to pursue their education and realize their goals. We are incredibly grateful to Terracon for their vision and commitment to building a strong and resilient pipeline of talent for the civil engineering profession.”
Looking forward
Terracon is investing in various aspects of the student experience to foster long-term success, and their endowment will continue to foster even greater opportunities for students. Undergraduate and graduate students with a GPA of at least 3.00 are eligible to apply through the Fulton Schools general scholarship application.
Kamil Kaloush, FORTA Professor of Pavement Engineering and Fulton Schools undergraduate civil engineering program chair, says collaborating with Terracon has helped and inspired students, lending to a culture of success throughout the program.
“Thank you to the Terracon team for this gift,” Kaloush says. “Terracon is an exemplary industry partner that has supported our students for years, and their contribution today will continue to support the civil engineers of tomorrow.”
