Much about the “robocall ecosystem” remains a mystery, says Adam Doupe, a Fulton Schools assistant professor of computer science and engineering. Many scammers doing the robocalling are now able to circumvent efforts to stop them — often by using the latest artificial intelligence techniques. A few new technologies promise to add authentication to caller ID to help thwart robocalls, but a victory over the scams will require support from public agencies and research funding sources such as Federal Communications Commission and the National Science Foundation, Doupe says.
