Italian highway collapse spurs closer looks at other bridge systems

The disastrous collapse of a large bridge in Italy should prompt transportation officials everywhere to more closely inspect and monitor the structural conditions of roadways, bridges and other public infrastructure, says Barzin Mobasher, a Fulton Schools professor of civil and environmental engineering. Climate change, growing urban traffic volume and new kinds of vehicles will likely pose challenges to ensuring transportation structures can handle the added stress.
