New Faculty Member, 2024–25

Abhishek Kumar

Associate Teaching Professor, Mechanical and aerospace engineering

Abhishek Kumar says he is fascinated by machines and how they make things easier for humans. This interest led him to choose a career in the field of mechanical engineering.

“Mechanical engineering is an evergreen branch of engineering that has been needed for any technology that moves,” Kumar says.

Kumar will be joining the faculty of the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, as an associate teaching professor after spending the past four years teaching at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

“The mechanical engineering program at ASU is highly ranked, and I want to be part of that,” Kumar says.

He will teach multiple courses in the mechanical and aerospace engineering program this year.

“I want to teach conventional mechanical and aerospace engineering classes,” Kumar says. “I want to develop courses that can teach students about new technologies such as artificial intelligence and additive manufacturing.”

He says that he is looking forward to exploring the world of teaching online courses and finding new ways to connect with students.

Kumar says that students in his classes should have a solid foundation in math and come to class regularly. He aims to create a welcoming environment and generate interest in the field he is passionate about.

“My goal is that after the class, students feel excited about the content of the course and want to explore more about the field on their own,” Kumar says.

In his free time, Kumar likes to listen to podcasts, volunteer at retirement communities and spend time with his 6-year-old son.

“My son had only one condition for moving: the house needed to have a pool. Luckily, in the Phoenix area, more houses fit that criteria compared to Boston,” Kumar says.
