Impact Award, Fall 2024
Adarsh Hiremath
Adarsh Hiremath chose to attend the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University in pursuit of his master’s degree in computer science. The school’s emphasis on the practical applications of research and innovation drove his ambition.
As a Fulton Schools student, Hiremath researched robotics and artificial intelligence, or AI. He investigated algorithms for AI-powered robotics as a graduate research assistant in the Logos Robotics Lab and through the Master’s Opportunity for Research in Engineering, or MORE, fellowship program.
As he advanced in his education, Hiremath was surprised by the wide range of fields that computer science influences.
“The ability to use algorithms to solve real-world problems, like predicting health outcomes and optimizing farming practices, is both fascinating and inspiring,” he says.
Hiremath says Nakul Gopalan, a Fulton Schools assistant professor of computer science and engineering, was particularly influential in his educational and career growth. He credits Gopalan’s mentorship with improving his abilities to develop algorithms and solve problems in new and creative ways.
For Hiremath, one of the most important lessons he learned from his time at ASU is the importance of a collaborative and supportive research environment.
“This culture of collaboration has proved that sharing knowledge and insights can lead to transformative ideas,” he says. “I will carry this spirit of mentorship and cooperation with me as I continue my journey in research and beyond.”
Beyond the classroom, Hiremath seized opportunities to contribute to the ASU community and beyond. He led the #SKYMEDITATION student organization as the club’s president, a role in which he helped 300 students improve their mental well-being. Hiremath also volunteered at the 2023 World Culture Festival, an event featuring food, music, meditation and culture from around the world.
After graduation, Hiremath plans to pursue a doctoral degree in AI and robotics at ASU. Long-term, he aims to use his knowledge and skills in the field to solve societal problems in elder care and agriculture.
“I aim to be part of transformative projects that improve quality of life and address global issues,” Hiremath says. “I hope to start my own venture to achieve these goals.”
