New Faculty Member, 2024–25

Xi Yu

Assistant Professor, Manufacturing engineering

Xi Yu is a new faculty member eager to immerse herself in the vibrant atmosphere of Arizona State University. After serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering at West Virginia University, Yu will now be an assistant professor of manufacturing engineering in the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering

“From my first day on campus, I could feel the energy driven by a community of individuals who are willing to take risks and embrace new ideas,” Yu shares.

She believes that the university fosters an environment where experimentation and growth are encouraged, making it an ideal place for researchers, educators and students to contribute to new advancements in interdisciplinary fields.

Yu’s decision to pursue mechanical engineering was initially motivated by the field’s promising career prospects. With both parents being first-generation college students who left their hometowns in search of better opportunities, Yu says she grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work and sacrifice.

Fortunate to join an engineering program during a time when interdisciplinary research was gaining momentum, Yu engaged in special topics programs such as robotics, which revealed the potential of machines to perform tasks that once seemed unimaginable. Today, her commitment to engineering remains strong, fueled by a passion for bringing new ideas to life.

“For a long time, I’ve seen many engineering students struggle with core concepts because they often feel disconnected from real-world engineering applications,” Yu explains. “Now, I have a unique opportunity to bridge this gap and demonstrate how concepts can directly support and enhance engineering practices in my course.”

In her free time, Yu explores cities, creating elaborate maps of hidden gems for foodies.

“I’m looking forward to adding the top food destinations in Phoenix to my collection,” Yu says.
