Wesley Coomber — Outstanding Undergraduate

Wesley Coomber
B.S. in Software Engineering
Graduated from Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, California

After a self-described less-than-stellar high school performance, Wesley Coomber came to Arizona State University to take advantage of the financial aid he was offered.

Today, he’s graduating with a 4.0 grade point average as a student in Barrett, the Honors College and a recipient of the New American University and the Lee P. and Phyllis W. Thompson Quasi Memorial scholarships.

Needless to say, he’s turned things around.

In addition to distinguishing himself academically, Coomber has pursued opportunities for growth and enrichment outside of the classroom. In the summer of 2015, he was accepted into the University of North Texas’ National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site in Denton, Texas. There he worked with faculty and graduate students on research projects focused on network security and software testing for web and mobile applications.

Thanks to his hard work, Coomber is confident he’s on the right path.

He describes being accepted to many quality graduate programs across the nation as a particular “ah-ha!” moment that confirms he’s on the right track.

He’s currently deciding between pursing a doctoral degree in computer science at New York University, Northwestern University or the University of Michigan.

Though his commitment to coursework has proven Coomber to be a tireless worker and a gifted engineer, he hasn’t lost the irreverent, goofy nature that undoubtedly contributed to his lackluster grades in high school.

When asked how software engineering will change the world, Coomber asserted it will continue to make “selfie and face-swapping apps for the yuppies of tomorrow.”

His desired achievements of engineering?

“Unleaning the Leaning Tower of Pisa, writing the elevator music for NASA’s space elevator and developing advanced multi-agent control systems for independent machine learning [artificial intelligences],” said Coomber.

Jokes aside, whatever Coomber ends up accomplishing, he’s determined to do it in style.

His dream in life is to be the software development version of “Steph Curry with the shot,” said Coomber.
