Students get behind-the-scenes view of transportation engineering

Dozens of Arizona high school students get an inside look at the impact of the work of transportation engineers through the Summer Transportation Institute program coordinated by the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
Students spend three weeks in the classroom and out in the field getting an introduction to fundamentals of transportation engineering. They learn about the technical and design skills that go into managing highway systems and airport traffic.
Students have visited sites of major Arizona transportation engineering highlights such the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge at the Hoover Dam Bypass, the behind-the-scenes operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the Valley Metro Light Rail train yard.
As part of this summer’s program students also got an educational tour of operations at the Deck Park Tunnel in Phoenix. Watch video about the tour produced by the Arizona Department of Transportation.
In addition to the technical aspects, students also learn of career opportunities in transportation and engineering fields.
