Outstanding Graduate, Fall 2024

Nicole Slaughter

Nicole Slaughter is a dynamic leader with a passion for impactful, intuitive design. She chose to pursue the graphic information technology, or GIT, program, specializing in user experience, or UX, in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University to balance her academic pursuits with a bustling career in digital marketing.

ASU’s flexible online degree program allowed Slaughter to advance her skills without impeding her professional momentum. Previously working as a Starbucks manager, she has always been inclined toward customer service and is looking forward to reaching beyond brick-and-mortar limits.

In college, she made a global impact, crafting user experiences that empower her community and beyond. Her pivot to technology led her down a path of discovery and design, where she unearthed a passion for UX.

“One of the first GIT courses I took really opened my eyes,” she says. “After the GIT program began, it was like I was butter melting into warm toast.”

GIT offered Slaughter more than she could have ever imagined. From video editing and animation to mastering the Adobe Design Suite, the theory-based curriculum she initially expected turned out to be a creative playground filled with opportunities to innovate.

“What I thought would just be wireframes and research has opened the door to so many other creative paths,” Slaughter says.

She attributes much of her early success to Assistant Teaching Professor benjie wilhelm, whose personal feedback and passion for the field helped her grow and refine her skills. Slaughter considers him a mentor who made learning online as engaging and enriching as if she were on campus.

Today, she confidently designs user-friendly, visually engaging digital interfaces from scratch.

“My biggest achievement is emerging from the program with the ability to fully create user-friendly, user-centric, functional and beautiful interfaces,” she says. “The best part is knowing they will positively impact the lives of people around the world.”

In her current role as director of digital content and marketing at Health Street, Slaughter is committed to creating what she calls “invisible yet invaluable” digital experiences. Her goal is to design seamless systems that feel second nature for users. By engineering elegant, intuitive user experiences, she aspires to add her unique mark to the field.
