Liu honored by scientific computing society

Huan Liu

Huan Liu has been named a Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for “contributions to broadening and deepening feature selection research for data mining and spearheading interdisciplinary research on social computing.”

Liu is a professor in the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering, one of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

ACM, with close to 100,000 members, is the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society.

The organization bestows the Distinguished Member designation on those who have achieved “significant advances in computing technology that have dramatically influenced progress in science, engineering, business, and many other areas of human endeavor,” including accomplishments that “sustain competitiveness in a global economy.”

Liu is one of 47 ACM colleagues to be selected as Distinguished Members in 2010. See the full ACM announcement.

He is among ACM members at leading research and academic institutions being recognized for achievements in cyber security, software engineering and architecture, data mining and management, Web systems, 3D user interfaces, interactive multimedia, biomedical computing and programming language implementation.

Liu joined ASU in 2000 after conducting research in Telecom (Telstra) Australia Research labs and teaching at the National University of Singapore.

He has been recognized for excellence in teaching and research in computer science and engineering at ASU. His research and teaching focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, social computing, and real-world applications.
