Valley man warns of kidnapping scam as crooks use AI to enhance schemes
Scammers are using artificial intelligence (AI) voice-cloning technology to call parents with AI-generated recordings of their child’s voice claiming they have been abducted and demanding a ransom of $10,000. Voice-cloning technology is increasingly accessible through websites and apps, making it easier for scammers to replicate voices and deceive people. Subbarao Kambhampati, a professor of computer science at the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, explained how the AI software can copy someone’s voice after merely a few seconds of a speech. Furthermore, Kambhampati calls for improved scam-blocking technology to counter these fraudulent calls.
