Street teams, cool pavement, shady trees: How Phoenix protects residents from extreme heat
Efforts in the Phoenix area to find solutions to the intensifying urban heat effect are being looked at by other cities and metropolitan areas facing similar climate and environmental challenges, including Dallas, Texas. Some of the solutions to mitigating the impacts of high temperatures are being developed by ASU researchers. Among them is Fulton Schools faculty member and urban climatologist Ariane Middel (pictured with her mobile meteorological monitoring technology), director of the university’s Sensible Heatscapes and Digital Environments lab, or SHaDE lab. One project involves a coating called Cool Seal that can be used on asphalt surfaces. It’s been found to reduce the air temperature on these surfaces, making them more comfortable for people.
