The Arizona Commerce Authority is investing $4 million to boost the talent pipeline for the semiconductor industry. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., or TSMC, is investing more than $5 million in the program to fund on-the-job training and education tuition support for its apprentice employees. TSMC is expanding its extensive manufacturing facilities in the north Phoenix. Terry Alford, professor and associate director of the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of the Fulton Schools, says investments are needed to overcome acute shortages of engineers and technicians needed by industry.
