SolarSPELL wins ‘best in show’ award at South by Southwest

Among college faculty members who made notable contributions to the recent South by Southwest Festival in Texas was Laura Hosman, an associate professor in The Polytechnic School, part of the Fulton Schools. Hosman is co-founder and director of SolarSPELL, which evolved from an assignment she gave to her engineering students to create a humanitarian project to provide people around the world with portable, solar-powered library devices. It won the festival’s “best in show” award. Another Fulton Schools contributor was Klaus Lackner, director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions and professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, who talked about the carbon-capture technology he developed.
