In the Impending Cyberwar, Engineers Must Be on the Front Lines
Technology that once existed only in science fiction is today rapidly evolving and broadening its reach and its power throughout the real world. The trend is evident in increasingly sophisticated uses of cyberwarfare techniques, say Fulton Schools Professor Brad Allenby and Associate Professor Mikhail Chester, writing in the American Society of Civil Engineers News. They contend the capabilities of cyber tech make it perhaps a more effective weapon in geopolitical conflict than conventional weapons of war. Allenby and Chester say it raises a critical challenge to ensure our country’s engineers gain sufficient expertise in cybersecurity to know how to protect the infrastructure and technologies engineers design, build and use from cyber threats.
