Boeing crashes and Uber collision show passenger safety relies on corporate promises, not regulators’ tests
Rapid pursuit of technological innovations can be dangerous when not done responsibly. That’s been shown by serious problems with automated aircraft flight systems and autonomous automobiles, say Thaddeus Miller and Adam Gabriele. Miller, an assistant professor in The Polytechnic School in the Fulton Schools and ASU’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society, and Gabriele, a doctoral student in that school, make the case that without more corporate transparency about new technologies, more rigorous testing and more thorough oversight, public trust and public safety will be at risk.
