ASU selected to lead new OSHA Training Institute Education Center
Arizona State University has been selected as one of four new OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers by the U.S. Department of Labor. ASU is one of 28 centers nationwide, and the only OTI Education Center in Arizona.
OTI Education Centers complement OSHA Training Institute education efforts by providing training to private sector and federal personnel from agencies outside OSHA. The centers also assist by administering the OSHA Outreach Training Program and its trainer courses which prepare participants to teach courses focusing on safety and health hazards.
“This is a great achievement and establishes us as an authority in safety and safety training in the region,” says Jim Rogers, faculty associate in the Del E. Webb School of Construction programs, School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE), and new director of the OTI Education Center.
Rogers, along with Ed Weaver, senior lecturer in SSEBE, prepared the proposal, working with Jonathan Klane, assistant director-safety programs for the Fulton Schools of Engineering and staff in the Environmental Health and Safety department who expressed a willingness to teach course modules.
“An OTI Education Center designation helps our School continue its long tradition of engagement with industry in the State of Arizona and regionally, and can help make Arizona industry more productive and safe,” states Edd Gibson, director, School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, one of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.
According to OSHA, the new centers, selected through a national competition, were evaluated based on organizational experience, staff experience, location and training facilities, marketing and recruitment, administrative capabilities, evaluation and the ability to provide training through a given region. ASU will be part of Region IX, which covers Arizona, California, Nevada, Hawaii and Guam.
OTI Education Center status is granted for a five-year period beginning in October 2012.
