eSpace studio offers more than an introduction to engineering

Fulton Engineering’s new eSpace design and prototyping studio opened for classes this fall. Aimed primarily at freshmen, the studio is an open, engaging space designed to build excitement about engineering and offer our students an opportunity to do real engineering work from day one.

The lab portion of many Introduction to Engineering (FSE 100) classes is held in the eSpace studio. Freshmen participate in multiple team-based projects culminating in a final project during the last half of the semester. These projects include hydroelectric power generators, solar cars, robotics and solar power generation systems.

Through this process, students are introduced to the engineering profession, learning the design process and engineering models. The classes are also designed to foster teamwork, problem-solving and critical communication skills that will help our students excel in both school and the workplace.

Students participating in Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) teams are also using the studio to plan their entrepreneurial service projects and test proposed engineering solutions.

The studio is part of our larger eSpace initiative to bring innovative, hands-on learning experiences to our students throughout their education. Experiential opportunities are an integral component of the overall student experience.
